Perfectly fluffy rice is one of the most useful skills in the kitchen — and one of the most commonly messed up. Here’s a foolproof method that works with just a pot.

The golden ratio

For most white rice, use 1 cup of rice to 1.5 cups of water. This ratio is the single most important thing to get right.

Rice type Rice : Water Cook time
White (long grain) 1 : 1.5 15 min
Basmati 1 : 1.5 15 min
Brown 1 : 2.25 40 min
Jasmine 1 : 1.25 12 min

Step 1: Rinse the rice

Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs (mostly) clear. This removes excess starch that makes rice gummy.

Step 2: Bring to a boil

Add the rice and water to a pot with a pinch of salt. Bring it to a boil over medium-high heat, uncovered.

Step 3: Simmer covered

Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover with a tight lid, and let it simmer. Don’t lift the lid — you need the trapped steam.

Step 4: Rest, then fluff

When the time is up, turn off the heat and let it sit covered for 5 minutes. Then fluff gently with a fork. This rest step is what makes it light and separate.

FAQ

Why is my rice mushy? Too much water or stirring during cooking. Stick to the ratio and don’t stir.

Why is it crunchy? Not enough water or the heat was too high. Add a splash of water, cover, and cook a few more minutes.

Conclusion

Rinse, use the right ratio, simmer covered, and rest. Master those four steps and you’ll never ruin rice again.
